Look: Take a walk around your house – inside and out. Look for any cracked windows and window panes, damaged roof or missing shingles, or a compromised concrete foundation. Remove: Try to start your spring cleanup earlier then later. Pick up debris from windows, fallen tree branches, and anything lying up against the concrete foundation. Cleaning gutters also plays a large role in preventing mold. Clogged gutters are breeding grounds for fungi as it loves the cool, damp location. When clogged water cannot pass through it may eventually leak into the house. Unknowingly, you may have mold growing in a room before you even notice the leak. So make sure to sweep, clean, and maintain the gutters of your home yearly.

Driveway Test: One of the best measures to prevent mold buildup is the driveway test. Ideally, you want a properly sloped driveway that flushes easily and doesn’t hold onto water easily. What you will do is pour 8-10 oz of water directly on the cement and watch how it runs off. You may want to do this a few times and in different locations on the driveway. Once the water is down look at how and where the water runs off to and how it drains. If the water runs off away from the house then you are in good shape. If you see it running back toward your foundation and into your garage then you will want to get a professional opinion on the matter.
